Las Vegas was recently named among the 25 best hiking cities in the US!

Las Vegas, often known for its dazzling lights and vibrant nightlife, also boasts a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts – its breathtaking hiking trails. Nestled amidst the desert landscapes, the best places to hike in and near Las Vegas offer a stark contrast to the city’s glitz and glamour. No wonder it was named among the best hiking cities in the US!

If you’re ready to trade the slot machines for hiking boots, here are some top destinations to explore:

  1. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area: Located just a short drive west of the Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon is a haven for hikers. The park features a spectrum of trails suitable for all levels, from the easy and family-friendly Calico Tanks to the challenging and rugged Turtlehead Peak. The striking red rock formations, diverse flora, and occasional wildlife sightings make this a must-visit destination.
  2. Valley of Fire State Park: Aptly named for its fiery red sandstone formations, Valley of Fire is a surreal landscape that lies about an hour from Las Vegas. The park offers numerous hiking opportunities amidst towering rock formations and petroglyph-adorned canyons. Don’t miss the Fire Wave trail for its mesmerizing striated sandstone.
  3. Lake Mead National Recreation Area: Combining hiking with water activities, Lake Mead offers an array of trails along its shores and into the surrounding desert. The Historic Railroad Trail, which follows the path of an old railroad, offers scenic views of the lake and its unique rock formations.
  4. Bootleg Canyon: Mountain biking and hiking enthusiasts will find Bootleg Canyon, just outside Boulder City, to be a true adventure playground. With miles of trails through the desert terrain, it’s a destination for those seeking a more exhilarating outdoor experience.
  5. Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area: About 20 miles south of Las Vegas lies Sloan Canyon, home to the famous Petroglyph Canyon trail. This easy-to-moderate hike takes you to a stunning collection of petroglyphs created by the ancient inhabitants of the area, providing a glimpse into the region’s rich history.
  6. Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail: This is one of my families long time favorites! If you’re up for a challenging hike and the reward of soaking in natural hot springs, the Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail is the one for you. This trail features a series of hot spring pools along the Colorado River, making it a unique and unforgettable experience.

There’s truly something to enjoy for everyone! Remember to prepare adequately for your hikes by bringing plenty of water, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing. Some trails can be quite strenuous, so it’s essential to know your fitness level and choose accordingly. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual adventurer, the hiking opportunities in and near Las Vegas are sure to leave you awe-inspired and rejuvenated amidst the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert.

So, now that the weather is cooling down, lace up those hiking boots and embark on an unforgettable journey through the scenic wonders that surround the Entertainment Capital of the World.

And for those of you travel bugs, save this list next time you’re itching to hit the road! CNN researched and put together a list of 25 US cities that are absolutely tops for those who love hiking, or at least, love to get outside from time to time. These cities are close to green spaces, hiking trails, waterfalls and mountains. They also have urban trails and public parks. They used resources like LawnStarter, then went further to include cities across the country with great appeal to outdoor lovers.

Happy hiking Las Vegas!
