Annular Solar Eclipse on October 14, 2023

‘Ring of fire’ solar eclipse will slice across Americas on Saturday with millions along path, and you could be one of them!

About the Annular Solar Eclipse

During an annular solar eclipse, the apparent size of the Moon’s disk is slightly smaller than the apparent size of the Sun’s disk. Therefore, only the outer edge of the Sun remains visible and the Sun appears as a brilliant ring if you are inside the path of annular solar eclipse. This is an otherworldly sight often called a “ring of fire”. Here are instructions for the safely viewing solar eclipses by the American Astronomical Society and endorsed by several professional societies.

Impact of the eclipse in Nevada

The annular solar eclipse will attract people from throughout the nation. People will most likely drive the shortest path to a location inside the path of annular solar eclipse. This map shows that northern Nevada can expect visitors from the metropolitan areas of the San Francisco and Sacramento, much of Idaho, eastern Oregon, and most of Nevada. Those in Las Vegas may find a location in Utah to be a shorter drive.

For those of you Las Vegas Locals, here are some of the closest places where you can experience the magic of the 2023 solar eclipse.

1. Ely, Nevada:

Located in eastern Nevada, Ely is positioned almost directly in the path of the eclipse’s totality. This charming town is set against the backdrop of the majestic Great Basin National Park, offering both an ideal vantage point and a beautiful natural setting. Imagine the moon completely covering the sun while surrounded by the pristine wilderness of this national park.

2. Great Basin National Park:

Speaking of Great Basin National Park, it’s another fantastic choice to witness the eclipse. This remote and dark-sky location is renowned for stargazing, and on October 14th, it will be the perfect place to experience the solar eclipse as well. The park’s high elevation and clear skies enhance the eclipse viewing experience.

3. Cedar City, Utah:

If you’d like to explore Utah, Cedar City is a fantastic destination. Located about 150 miles from Las Vegas, Cedar City is right in the path of totality. The city’s friendly atmosphere, combined with its accessibility and favorable weather conditions, makes it a top choice for eclipse enthusiasts.

4. Bryce Canyon National Park:

For a truly awe-inspiring backdrop to the solar eclipse, consider Bryce Canyon National Park. This otherworldly landscape of hoodoos and red rock formations will make the eclipse even more magical. Bryce Canyon is approximately 80 miles from Cedar City, providing a convenient base for your eclipse adventure.

5. Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument:

Another remarkable spot in southern Utah is the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This vast, rugged landscape offers diverse terrain and an unspoiled view of the sky, making it an exceptional location for eclipse viewing.

Check out the video below to learn more about the Annular Solar Eclipse!

Usually you’d want to plan your trip well in advance, as many others will be seeking the same unique experience. But theres still time! You will never regret the effort to seek out a clear view of an annular eclipse of the Sun, it will register in your memory all your life!
